Ethnicity & Mental Health Improvement Programme

The Ethnic Mental Health Improvement Programme (EMHIP) is a pioneering initiative dedicated to transforming mental health care for Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.

This innovative programme is the result of a powerful collaboration between the Asian Resource Centre Croydon, Croydon BME Forum, South West London Integrated Care System (SWL ICS) South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM). Together, we are working to break barriers and deliver compassionate, culturally sensitive support that meets the unique needs of BAME individuals.

  • Research shows that BAME individuals experience mental health challenges at disproportionately high rates, yet many feel underserved by traditional services. These disparities are driven by a lack of culturally appropriate care and systemic inequalities in mental health provision. This often leads to experiences of mistrust and dissatisfaction with the health system.

EMHIP was created to address these challenges head-on by providing services that honor the cultural identities, personal experiences, and emotional needs of BAME communities. Our mission is to empower individuals to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives, reducing stress, building resilience, and restoring hope.

  • Life’s challenges, whether related to work, family, or personal struggles, can feel overwhelming, especially for those facing additional barriers because of culture and race. EMHIP’s approach is rooted in such sensitivity, offering support that reflects and resonates with the diverse experiences of BAME individuals. We aim to create an environment where you feel understood, valued, and cared for.

Through one-to-one or peer group sessions and workshops, EMHIP provides the tools and guidance needed to enhance emotional well-being. Every aspect of our service is designed in collaboration with local communities, ensuring that our care is relevant, empowering, and effective.

  • The impact of EMHIP is already evident. Participants report a 25% improvement in overall happiness and well-being, with 95% expressing a stronger sense of confidence and positivity after engaging with our services. These results reflect our commitment to creating lasting change, delivering care that not only acknowledges but celebrates the cultural richness of the communities we serve.

Supported by trusted local organisations and respected partners, EMHIP stands as a beacon of hope for individuals and families seeking meaningful support. Our services are completely free and accessible to everyone.

  • At EMHIP, we believe that emotional wellness is the foundation of a happy and fulfilling life. Whether you are facing stress, anxiety, or simply need a space to focus on your wellbeing, we are here to walk with you every step of the way.
